I work on issues in political philosophy and the history of normative thought from Grotius through Marx.

I’ve published a book on distributive justice and I am writing another wherein I articulate and defend a social democratic theory of justice.

I’m also interested in issues of non-ideal theory, including just war theory and how we should recognize and respond to systemic injustices.

My work is usually grounded in the history of philosophy. I view philosophy as a series of conversations about some hard questions that other disciplines can’t deal with – and I believe that one has to understand the conversation one wants to be part of, i.e. to know the relevant history of philosophy.
